Let’s talk inspiration // Chapter One movie premiere

Let’s talk inspiration for a moment.

I recently found myself on a boat cruising the San Francisco Bay with some of the most inspired and creative people I have ever met. I couldn’t believe how in alignment that experience was with who I am as a person.

I did a values exercise recently in an effort to understand what I want and need in life. The purpose of this exercise – which I highly recommend you do – is to gain clarity and knowledge on what’s important to me. To guide my choices and shape my future. Here’s a link if you’d like to give it a go.

Inspiration came in right at the top. My fuel. I’m constantly searching for more. Without it, I am not myself. Inspiration is mission critical. Close behind was connnection, simplicity, creativity, and discovery. This knowledge is power. And I’m constantly finding myself surrounded by people that share the same values. Wild.

Who is Luis Alberto Cruz?

There is nothing more fun than working on design projects that I have a personal connection to. LUISCRUZKITE.com was one of them.

There’s a Dominican kitesurfer in Cabarete that I’ve gotten to know over the past year. His name is Luis Alberto Cruz, and he might be one of the best freestyle kiteboarders in the world… But he is virtually unknown by the rest of the kiting community!

Kiteboarding in Cape Town, South Africa

Let me be the first to admit that I got worked in Cape Town. Worked like a crash test dummy being smashed into walls of water over and over again.

I remember that first session at Kite Beach in Bloubergstrand. I pumped up my smallest kite, rigged my lines, and tried in vain to squash the nerves building inside me. As I realized what kind of power I would have to hold down, I wondered if I was out of my depth as I was involuntarily being dragged towards the water by 30-something knots of thinly veiled fury. If I wasn’t in a mild state of panic the whole time, it would have been funny.

How would I describe the kiting conditions in Cape Town? The first word that comes to mind is extreme. Definitely not for the faint of heart. Honestly, some of the sessions were absolute punishment. But… I can’t even tell you how extraordinarily good the adrenaline rush is.

That time I set a world record…

Well, me and 414 other people. Still counts.

Some people would ask, “Why on earth would you WANT to get on the water with 400+ kiters?” or say, “It’s going to be a free-for-all out there!”  To be honest, I can see their point. But getting together with the entirety of the kiting community in Cape Town… I’m not sure I can put into words the feeling that came with participating in this event.
