Whether you’re a traveler, an at-home chef, budding philosopher, life coach, crafty mom (or pop!), or a master of DIY, you may have had the idea to share your stories, skills, and photos with the world.
I’ve spoken to many a future blogger in need of advice, and I wanted to share that advice with you.
Where do I even start?
- Come up with a clever name.
- Register a domain name. Avoid something complicated and hard to spell. I use Namecheap for domains.
- Get a hosting package. I recommend a basic plan with Shared Hosting.
- Save yourself some time and trouble and buy a WordPress theme.
- Write, baby, write!!!
Alright, I checked it all out. I honestly have no idea what I’m doing.
WordPress takes a bit of practice. But it’s absolutely worth stumbling your way through it to learn how it works. If you buy a theme, they typically come with easy to follow instructions in the included documentation.
If you’re feeling totally hopeless and “just want to write, damnit!!” – you can get a some help from a graphic and web designer, like me!
What makes a good blog?
Valuable content. Captivating stories. Quality writing. Beautiful photos.
Tell me more about these beautiful photos…
I’d recommend a decent camera (I use a Nikon D7200), and some editing software like Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. Nowadays, you can take some pretty epic photos on your smartphone, so you can always skip the investment and get started now!
What else do I need?
It’s worth considering creating you a logo and a visual branding plan, or getting some help with it. A blog that is visually appealing and communicates a consistent theme or story is a lot easier to get excited about!
Well, yes.. but what if nobody reads it?
You certainly can’t make people read what you write… but you can commit to creating and share beautiful content. The most important thing about what you write is it’s meaningful to you. And that you’re proud to share it. The rest? That comes later.
Can I make money blogging?
Definitely. But most people don’t. I don’t make money off of this blog… though I did include referral links to my favourite web hosting companies! So who knows? It coudl happen.
It’s absolutely possible to make money blogging, but if that’s your expectation, treat it like a full-time job. Study, practice, learn, and work hard. To somehow stumble into making a lot of money blogging would be very similar to tripping over a bag of cash on the street.
Start building your following, improving your content, and working on publicity and advertising. You may be able to show off your skills and get gigs as a freelance writer, build a big enough following to get brand partnerships, or make some money on selling ad space. Worst case scenario, you can use your blog as a portfolio to show off your knowledge about the topic you love.
I love it! I’m inspired. Blogs! Yes!!!
Hell yeah! Start writing today. Have fun, and send me a link when you’ve got your blog launched! I’d love to read what you create. <3
