I live in a perfect world.
I was just approached to star opposite a sexy A-list celebrity in a blockbuster film. My business projects are so immensely successful that I never look at my bank balance. The gorgeous man of my dreams just made an earth-shatteringly romantic gesture to profess his undying love to me. Fame, fortune, love. I have it all.
In my mind, of course. Duh.
I used to spend a lot of time daydreaming. Living inside my head, creating perfect worlds where everything I thought I wanted was delivered to me on a silver platter.
What was happening in my life that I was choosing to live in the daydream and not in the real world? I’ve realized that these elaborate stories of an imagined perfect life came from a lack of happiness and passion in my real life. I wasn’t satisfied by work, friendships, my love life, and to be very honest… myself.
In the past few years, I have had a major lifestyle shakeup. I am living outside of my home country. I have stepped away from relationships that are familiar. I am chasing my goals and dreams every day. I am living a happy and authentic life, and I no longer need the dream world. Or at least, the stories I sometimes create are all within reach… Once a dreamer, always a dreamer!
At our latest Reset Retreat, I had the joy of participating in a Yoga Play workshop with the lovely Lauren Zinn Buck. She is a professional coach from Austin with an improv background who has created a unique and thrillingly fun program that teaches how to be in the moment.
To put it simply, she taught us how much more fun, free, and authentic we are once we stop living in the past or planning for the future. Lauren taught us to be present and stop regretting something we said five minutes ago or formulating the next thing we are going to say, and to stop picking apart everything we have done or may do.
What if we could just be here now?
Let me tell you about how successful my daydreams have been: I am not a celebrity. I am not rolling in cash. My wedding day was so far removed from what I’d dreamed it to be for months that it’s almost comical. My perfect marriage with a perfect family and perfect suburban life only lasted a year. That handsome man with that epic romantic gesture never appeared.
Perhaps instead of living in my dream life, I should have been actually creating happiness in my real life. But I can’t worry about that… because that’s the past and now I’m living in the moment!
How do I practice living in the moment?
- When I start focusing on a past regret, I redirect my focus on letting go and bring myself back to now.
- When my mind starts drifting towards my life as an epic kiteboarder, I train so that I can accomplish that in real life.
- When I fantasize about the potential success of my companies, I work hard so I can create that success.
- When I dream about that guy booking that flight because he missed me so much, I remember that waiting for something to happen means I’m not enjoying the present moment, and it’s up to me to make myself happy.
Wishing, waiting, analyzing and regretting do not enrich the present.
I ask myself: How do I feel right now? What do I want to do today? What would excite me? What would make me happy? Then I go do it.
Because this moment is precious.
And so is this one.
What would make you happy right now? Make the most of this moment. Get out there and start converting your dreams into your reality. You are writing your own storyline… make it a good one!
